Collection of 67 photos, perhaps for the press as text tape on back for most, of the visit of King Victor Emmanuel III to Spain in June 1924. This is an important period in both Spain and Italy as both Mussolini (1922) and Primo de Rivera (1923) had just come to power. This event followed soon after the visit of the Spanish monarchy and Primo de Rivera to Italy. Numerous photos of King Alfonso as the royal family visited Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona. There is one photo of a disgruntled Primo de Rivera with the monarch.t-scw531a1SCW 531t-scw531a2SCW 531 Apparently he was upset that Mussolini did not accompany the royal family to Spain and therefore elected to not accompany any of the events held in their honor. A rare collection of a little known event. m

A set of 11 American strip cards titled The Nightmare of Warfare c1938. This subset focuses on the Spanish Civil War. Rare. m

Price: $330.00

Note: The anonymous strip card series entitled “The Nightmare of Warfare” was a copycat version of Gum, Inc.’s more elaborate “Horrors of War” set. The design on coloration of the cards and the intentional pirating of titles and text from a competitor all point to the W.S. Corporation as the producer. The artwork is limited to black silhouettes set against yellow backgrounds, with an occasional red accent thrown in. The vertically-aligned backs have the set title, card number, a “series of 48” line, card title, and text – all printed in black ink on gray stock. Since these are strip cards, one or two edges on all cards will be rouletted.

t-scw506SCW 506Correspondence to and from a Republican in prison at the Concentration Camp of La Merced. His name is Jose Trabal Canals. His letters clearly indicate that he is trying to demonstrate that he is reformed and a pure Nationalist. Very interesing set of correspondence where D.Manuel J.Fal Conde writes to the authorities explaining that Canals was always a monarchist and Nationalist. The authorities write back that it is not enough for Canals to say he is a Nationalist, he has to show his ID card. Other bits include Canals free movement document, his vaccination card, letters from a person named Mercedes while he is in prison, a letter from someone attempting to find a person named Alfonso who may be in the hospital, telegram letting Canals know that his parcel was sent, an invitation to Conde to attend an event with the Queen of Portugal.  The value of this collection is the attempt to appeal to the authorities that a Republican POW was actually a Monarchist and Nationalist, and the reaction of the authorities. 15 manuscripts in total.  m SOLD

t-scw501SCW 501Archive belonging to an Italian fighting with the Fascists in Spain in 1938 and 1939. His name was Capital Luigi Filippo Benedettini and he was in flight reconnaissance with the Italian Air Force. Many documents, piled up approximately 8cm high. It includes 14 manuscript pages in typed and draft form titled “Pro Memoria Per S.E.”, hand drawn maps of his area of operations, journal from the naval academy, an invitation to attend a royal funeral at the Pantheon, letters home from Barcelona, several telegrams, instructions from the Ministry of Defense, sheet music and postcards, theatre plays, letters to the Italian embassy stating that he is going to Italy to purchase photographic equipment for the Air Force and that this is an urgent matter and he should not be delayed, handwritten songs of the day, detailed listing of his pay in Spain, t-scw501aSCW 501a checklist of items he purchased for the air force in Italy (stamped 6th Section Taller Zaragoza, rare group of 5 anti-communist leaflets dropped by air over Barcelona in the closing stages of the war, captured identification slips for members of the Solidaridad Internacional Antifascista, declaration from army headquarters that Barcelona has been captured, photos of victorious Moroccan, Spanish and Italian troops marching in Barcelona, small Italian flag signed by his comrades given to him in 1939, several newspapers such as La Nueva Espana, Il Noticiera as well as 16 issues of IL LEGIONARIO, which was the newspaper for the Italian soldiers fighting in Spain. The later dates from April to August, 1938 and is a rare find, large cloth backed map of Spain used by Benedettini and a supplement image of Republican General Enrique Lister, along with a very rare Aucu satiriizing the Fascist war effort in Spain. The value of this archive is that the Italian effort during the Civil War was from the Italian army, so it is rare to find anything Air Force related to Italy. Benedettis role in aerial reconnaissance toward the end of the conflict provides a rare opportunity to see not only the propaganda leaflets he dropped from the air but also his memoirs of what occurred at this time. t-scw492SCW 492Auca showing the history of solidarity in Catalunya, dated 1906. M

Price: $600.00

Note: An auca is a graphic format popular in Spain and especially in the region of Catalonia around Barcelona. The genre dates at least to the 17th century but was banned during the 18th century before experiencing a renewal during the 19th and later the 20th centuries as a uniquely Catalonian form of expression. It takes the form of a cartoon or a comic strip, typically with 48 blocks of image and text, although some may have less. An auca is generally produced as a single sheet, but occasionally a booklet form is used. The captions tend to have some sort of consistent rhyme to assist with the flow and storytelling. Many times the term “auca” appears in the title, but another term, “aleluya,” is used, apparently interchangeably. Some sources indicate that the aleluya originated in Castile and originally included religious elements that were shed over time. Auca was a very popular form of anti-Nationalist propaganda during the Civil War.
