Collection of 6 19th and 20th century illustrations of Preto Brazilians from French and Italian periodicals. Shows negro revolts in Para and Rio de Janeiro. The former involved two hundred blacks, led by the French adventurer Fernando Odel, who escaped with other companions from Guiana and broke into the gold mines of the Cassipore region, trying to seize it and succeeding at first to expel the workers, after having thrown terror among the peaceful villagers. The lava cleaners of the nearby mines flocked, a real battle was engaged, ending with the flight of the daring adventurers. Odel was taken prisoner and transferred to the prisons of Belem. m

Note: Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme, 1778–1842, was a Chilean independence leader who freed Chile from Spanish rule in the Chilean War of Independence. He was a wealthy landowner of Spanish and Irish ancestry. Although he was the second Supreme Director of Chile(1817–1823), he is considered one of Chile's founding fathers, as he was the first holder of this title to head a fully independent Chilean state.
