Spanish Civil War /History
MR 103Interesting AUCA titled “Auca del Moro Feixista” or, Auca of the Fascist Moor. Written in Calalan and published by the Comissariat de Propaganda de la Generalitat de Catalunya it is the ficticious story of a Moor named Ben Hamet. He is taken from the Riff War and converted to Chrisitianity. He abandons his muslim belief, eats pork (5), drinks alcohol and smokes (6), abandons Allah (11) and embraces Jehova. He joins the militia (12), learns to be violent (13) and prepares for battle, where he is subsequently wounded (19). He becomes a seminarist. He whip the crowd into a frenzy (29) and tells them to go to the cemetery, where he and others are attacked. The “dirty Moroccan” sees that all is lost (36) so he intentionally feigns madness by shouting but the Reds don’t believe him because he is wearing a cross and the Reds don’t wear crosses (39), so he is sent to prison (40). Thinking he will be executed (41), he looks to escape and finds a small bomb (42). Seeing 3 militiamen playing cards at a table he plans to throw the bomb at them, but unfortunately for him, the bomb explodes in his hand (45). Everyone rushes to see what happened but all that is left of the “blessed” Moroccan is a finger (48)…..and this is how it ends, in pieces, for the criminals Ben Hamets. What is interesting is that Ben Hamet is referred to in the singular up until the last frame, where he is discussed in plural. KH

Three bound volumes of La Flacha. Covers the period1870-1871, 1873-1874 and (as the renamed La Madeja) 1875-1876. The periodical was suspended during Third Carlist War in 1872, and there were periodic disruption. There are 193 issues in total, under the names of La Flaca, La Madeja and El Lio. The third volume has all the final issues but it appears that another periodical was originally bound with it as well and was removed. In remarkable condition in terms of no spotting or water damage. It appears to be a complete run but I cannot be sure. m

Note: La Flaca was a Spanish satirical magazine, with republican and federal leanings, published in Barcelona between March 27, 1869 and March 3, 1876, coinciding with the Democratic presidential term, when the freedom of the press allowed such publications. The weekly issue was four pages, written in Castilian and had national distribution to the Spanish Colonies, France and Italy . It suffered various suspensions and in order to avoid censorship , the magazine was published under different headings from time to time.
SCW 033Chicos was a weekly Spanish childrens comic that was published early in the Franco regime and lasted until 1955. It was first publish on 23 February 1938, in San Sebastian , a city where production of comics was centered in the "national zone" during the civil war . Its editor and owner was Juan Baygual and its artistic and literary director was Gil Roesset Consuelo. Its format was very similar to the Flechas y Pelayos but with fewer pages and a more affordable price (10 cents instead of 25). On November 15 of that year, the magazine became the property of the National Delegation of Press and Propaganda. However, Chicos was never a propaganda magazine (although, obviously, it had to remain within the dominant ideology). Due to its good relations with the Franco regime it had no trouble getting the quota of paper required to publish weekly. The collection I have covers the period 1942-1945. M
