French West Africa
14 colonial postcards of the Cereres people of Senegal.
Price: $420.00
NOTE: The "Cereres" refers to the Serer people of Senegal, the third largest ethnic and religious group in Senegal known for their agricultural expertise, farming traditions, and matrilineal social structure. While historically practicing their indigenous Fat Roog religion with ancestor veneration, a significant portion of the Serer population has also converted to Islam or Christianity, often blending traditional beliefs with their new faiths. The Serer people have a rich history of resisting the expansion of Islam and French colonial rule, while maintaining a strong cultural identity tied to their ancestral lands and community.
17 colonial postcards of the Oulaff people.
Price: $510.00
NOTE: The "Oulaff" or Wolof people of Senegal are the largest and most culturally influential ethnic group in the country and also live in neighboring Gambia and Mauritania. Once part of the powerful Wolof (or Jolof) Empire, the empire fragmented in the 16th century due to internal strife and trade shifts. The Wolof states resisted French colonial expansion in the 19th century but were eventually subjugated by the end of the century. While some Wolof were early converts, mass conversion to Islam occurred in the 19th century as a means of resistance to French colonial forces. Since Senegal's independence in 1960, the Wolof have been the politically and economically dominant ethnic group.
