La Difesa Della Razza, or The Defense of the Race, was a bi-weekly magazine run by Telesio Hinton, ran from 5 August 1938 to 20 June 1943. It was the main medium through which Italian fascist racial policies were communicated to the public.

The magazine appears on the scene with powerful financial and political support, accompanied by a relentless campaign.  In particular, Education Minister Bottai delivered a ministerial circular dated 6 August 1938  to all university presidents and directors of schools in Italy, calling for all educational  institutions to actively contribute to the diffusion of the journal and to assimilate its contents into school curriculum.  The magazine incessantly repeated its stereotypes of racism, cloaked in attempted scientific authority.

In the climate of fascist Italy La Difesa Della Razza was the first major magazine of the anti-racial revival and was soon joined by other publications. Each of them specialized on a particular aspect of racist propaganda to reach the same conclusions.  If La Difesa Della Razza could not convince most of the Italians of the validity of its extremist view, the fact remains that it helped create (or strengthen) a climate of deep distrust and dislike for Jews, Africans, gypsies, mestizos, the mentally ill, and all those who were presented as a threat to the supposed purity of the Italian race), without which the regime could not act without hindrance. A very very rare magazine, I have issues 1-6 of the first year and issues 1-13 of the second year.  19 issues in total, complete. B

Nazi anti-semitic propaganda leafletHOL 007

Nazi anti-semitic propaganda leaflet dropped over the American lines. The front shows a crippled soldier standing in front of a seated fatcat Jewish banker smoking a cigar, with the caption It's Your Job to Fight!. On the back it reads, Boys from the States. Hallo. I bet you did not make big money before the war or else you would not be here now. Think you're going to make a nickel more when and if you get out of it? But those guys who had millions when it started will have many more millions when it's all over. It's YOU who takes all the chance and it's THEY who take all the profits. What a lovely deal. Or did Wallstreet-bigwigs Messrs. Morgan & Baruch & Co offer you a share - profit - bargain? If at least they would show up in the front lines your jolly juiceless jews. Ever see ONE in your unit? But sure they fight: for bigger and bigger profits. There is something decidedly wrong when this sort of thing continues indefinitely....DON'T you think? M

t-wa025WA 025Jewish interest. One of the original bankers to come to Montana was Lewis H. Hershfield who hailed from Oneida County, N.Y. (born August 21, 1836). With the onslaught of new people into Montana Hershfield knew what commodities would be in hot demand and so he came into Virginia City (July 1864) with more than 25 wagons loaded with material, which he quickly sold for gold dust. This was the basis of his new banking business. His brother, Aaron joined the firm in 1867. This firm was one of the most successful institutions and was instrumental in many areas of government financing. Montana became a state on November. 8, 1889, with Helena as the capital.

Here is a really magnificent example of a sight draft from Helena in 1880 (the year hard - rock mining began) written (and signed) by L.H. Hershfield, himself. Featured on the left is a beautiful vignette of a maiden holding the scaled of justice in her right hand and sword and wheat shaft in her left. Gold coins a strewn at her feet and an old style commercial ship with sails billowing is in the background. These were printed by the American Bank Note Company. Bm
